Project Leadership Helps Muncie Kids Prepare for College and Careers

Project Leadership serves to increase high school and postsecondary completion rates by helping students plan and prepare for college and careers. Education is a vital part of improving the quality of life for Muncie residents, as reflected in Muncie Action Plan, and Project Leadership is one of the educational leaders for the Muncie community.

One of Project Leadership’s main efforts is helping Muncie students enroll in the 21st Century Scholars Program, an Indiana scholarship that provides every Hoosier with a pathway to an affordable college degree. Eligibility is based on certain household factors including income and family size. Students must pledge to graduate high school with a 2.5 grade-point average. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunches typically also qualify for free or reduced college tuition through the 21st Century Scholars Program. Thanks to Project Leadership’s tireless efforts, the enrollment of eligible Scholars in Delaware County has increased from 28% to 80% since they began actively recruiting for the program in 2009!

How Muncie Community Members Can Benefit From Project Leadership:

  1. Project Leadership helps eligible Muncie families register their middle school students for the 21st Century Program and recruits at local middle schools to help with the registration process.
  2. Once enrolled in the program, Project Leadership provides mentorship to help guide Scholars through high school.
  3. Bridge programming helps with the transition from high school to college. In partnership with the Muncie Delaware County Chamber of Commerce, FAFSA workshops are available to help families apply for college and financial aid opportunities.
  4. ICE League (Inner City Education) is a community-wide middle school basketball league that emphasizes student athletes grades. More information is available at ICELeague.org.

How to take action:

If a student qualifies for free or reduced lunches in their elementary or middle school, they probably qualify for a college scholarship through 21st Century Scholars. Call the Project Leadership Office at 765-651-0650 or visit scholars.in.gov/parents/enroll to find out more about qualifications.

Anyone who is looking to prepare for college/career or needs help with college/career planning should reach out to Project Leadership. Pass this information along!

“No factor is more important to the success of a community than the health of its economy driven by the education of its people. The education level of a community’s workforce is one of the most important factors in determining the types of jobs that can be offered by existing and prospective employers.” — Excerpt from MAP 2
