NEWLY-OPENED HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CENTER IN MUNCIE

Muncie’s newly-opened Healthy Lifestyle Center (HLC) aims to improve the health and well-being of all community members by providing free services from a comprehensive team of health specialists who offer resources, education, and services in exercise, weight loss, nutrition, food assistance, mental health, speech and audiology, and social work. Located on the Meridian Health Services campus at the corner of Tillotson Avenue and Main Street, the Healthy Lifestyle Center’s mission states “everyone deserves the chance to be healthy.”

Nicole Koontz, Associate Director of the Adult Fitness Program at Ball State University, is one of the health specialists who works at the HLC. Koontz is excited about the wide variety of people who come to work with the HLC team.

Koontz recently helped a mother with young children who had stopped working out because going to the gym had become too difficult. They designed an in-home workout that could be completed before the kids woke up, a simple, realistic lifestyle change that will allow her to feel better and be healthier.

Koontz also helps connect people to resources such as suggesting safe and secure indoor walking and fitness locations throughout the city that are available to the public. Consistent with the HLC’s belief that both food and exercise are forms of medicine, simply going for a walk in indoor public spaces can be part of routines that help people stay happy and healthy during these cold winter months. Whatever your health level is, the HLC team wants to support you in bettering your health in the midst of your current situation.

MAP’s Initiative 1 is “Linking Health, Education, and Prosperity.” The HLC helps people achieve healthier lives with simple steps tailored to each person’s specific needs. The Healthy Lifestyle Center is operated by the Ball State University College of Health in collaboration with the Indiana University School of Medicine-Muncie and in partnership with the Meridian Health Services. It is supported by a grant from the Ball Brothers Foundation.

Partnering with the HLC is easy:

  • You’ll never be asked to pay for services.

  • You don’t need insurance.

  • You don’t need a physician’s referral.

  • You can access free MITS passes to get to the HLC.

  • You’ll work with a team focused solely on your health and well-being.

Muncie Action Plan strives to strengthen the well-being and prosperity of Muncie community members and is excited for the education and services available through the HLC.
